Ryan Giggs: I'll help if Wales need me
Manchester United veteran Ryan Giggs appears to have opened the door to a possible international return with Wales.
The 37-year-old retired from international football in 2007 but the recent appointment of his former team-mate Gary Speed as manager has led to speculation he could come back.
Speed himself has given no clues as to whether Giggs could feature in his planning but the player today gave a clear indication he would consider it.
When asked about the subject, Giggs told Sky Sports News: “I don’t know. At the moment I am just concentrating on playing for United.
“But I played with Gary – he was a great player and I am sure he will do a great job for Wales.
“In the future if he ever needed any help or ever needed anything from me, that would be no problem.
“But at the moment I just wish him all the best and I just hope he can get Wales winning.”
Cardiff-born Giggs is one of the greatest players in Welsh history.
He made his debut for his country in 1991 and went on to win 64 caps and captain the side.
He stood down to concentrate on prolonging his club career but, with no immediate thoughts of retirement, could yet add to his tally.
When asked how long he felt he could continue playing, he said: “For the last two or three years we have reviewed it as the season has gone on to see what I’m doing next year and we’ll do the same this season.
“At the moment I am enjoying it more than ever.”
Returning to the international fold would raise the exciting prospect of seeing Giggs line-up alongside Gareth Bale.
The Tottenham youngster has become one of the British game’s brightest stars over the past year, playing in Giggs’ old position on the left wing.
Giggs, who will face Bale in the Barclays Premier League this weekend, said: “Everyone in the world sat up and took notice of his performances over two legs against Inter Milan.
“When you have got pace, power and the crossing and finishing ability he has got, he is going to cause teams problems.
“Hopefully he won’t do that to us on Sunday but as a winger myself and a proud Welshman, hopefully he can do it for Wales as well for a long time to come.”
Giggs’ immediate priority is to help United win another Premier League title - a success which would earn him a 12th winners’ medal.
United currently top the table by two points from rivals Manchester City.
Giggs said: “As a team I think we can improve but we are happy where we are and happy with our performances so far.
“It is a tough league this season, everyone is beating everyone and there have been some strange results.
“You have to be at your best every game and we probably haven’t been, but we have got that resolve and that experience and good defenders that can keep out teams.
“We are happy with our position and hopefully we can get better.”
