Ryan Giggs reveals his ultimate song playlist on Spotify

Manchester United legend and veteran Ryan Giggs has talked of his musical inspirations...dating back to nights at the Hacienda.

The Welshman, who moved to Salford in 1980, revealed in an interview with Spotify that The Stone Roses were his favourite band of all time and that

Manchester bands Happy Mondays and Oasis would always make it on to his pre-match play list.

Unlike Giggs, the Stone Roses had a 15-year career break, pursuing their solo and other projects, while he just kept on tearing it up on the wing.

He also admitted to making appearances at the Hacienda alongside his early appearances for Manchester United.

He said: “My memories of that time, going out to the Hacienda and various other clubs and pubs with friends, are really powerful.

"It’s always nice to be taken back instantly to that moment when you hear a certain song from then. Something like Stone Roses’ Fools Gold or N.W.A.’s Straight Outta Compton.”

There are a couple of surprising additions in the playlist, thanks to Ryan's daughters and their choice of music on the school run.

He said" There are two we always have on; Adele’s Hometown Glory and Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe.

"The other thing that always happens is my daughters tell me off for singing the wrong words to every single song.”

Clearly 20 plus years playing in Manchester has rubbed off on the Cardiff boy

Is there one year in music that particularly sticks out for you?

1989 or 1990. My memories of that time, going out to the Hacienda and various other clubs and pubs with friends, are really powerful. It’s always nice to be taken back instantly to that moment when you hear a certain song from then. Something like Stone Roses’ Fools Gold or N.W.A.’s Straight Outta Compton.

What motivational songs are on your pre-match playlist?

I find Calvin Harris quite motivating at the moment. Coldplay’s Paradise is in there too. Then there’s the classics of course, things like Happy Mondays’ Step On, Oasis’ Supersonic and Stereophonic’s Dakota.

What album reminds you of home?

That would be Maxwell’s MTV Unplugged – I just love that record.

What were you listening to at school?

Any tracks from those classic 80’s movies like Top Gun, Back To The Future, Teen Wolf, Ghostbusters – things like Starship and Huey Lewis & The News! The other two I immediately think of are Marvin Gaye singing Ain’t No Mountain High Enough and Womack & Womack’s Teardrops.

What songs can always be heard at a Giggs family wedding or party?

Luther Vandross’ Never Too Much and The Jackson 5, The Love You Save have to be there…

What songs always feature on the school run?

It’s a very, very close one for me, but I think it has to be The Stone Roses.
