Ryan Giggs celebrates the treble at his George's restaurant in Worsley
Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs celebrated a hat-trick of success with his George’s restaurant in Worsley - toasting the venue’s three year anniversary with family, friends and star guests.
Ryan launched George’s in his home village with his school friends Kelvin Gregory and Bernie Taylor in 2014, and they haven’t looked back since.
Indeed, Ryan said at the birthday bash on Thursday night that the team are actively looking for NEW sites for George’s in Manchester city centre to replicate their winning formula.
Ryan said: “It’s always hard work starting from scratch, but now we’ve got a really consistent product and we really want to build on that success.
“From the start, we wanted to create a place that we would want to go to - a place we thought was missing in the village where we grew up.
“We feel we’ve achieved that now, and to build on that, to build on the George’s brand, of course we start to think about other locations.
“We don’t want to jinx what we’ve already got, but we feel we’ve got a really good product here so why wouldn’t we replicate that? I’ve got an eye out for potential locations in the city, but when and where that will be, you’ll have to wait and see!”
The evening was billed as “celebrating the treble” - something that Ryan knows all about of course given his success at United. So how did the restaurant celebration compare to winning that infamous 1999 treble with United, we asked?
Ryan laughed: “I’m sober for a start! But owning a restaurant, there are a lot of similarities with football - it’s all about building a good team around you and trying to get that consistency.”
Stars of TV, football and radio attended the lavish birthday bash, including Coronation street favourites Kym Marsh, Katie McGlynn. Dolly-Rose Campbell and Sally-Ann Matthews, Hollyoaks star Nicole Barber-Lane with her former co-star Jorgie Porter, Real Housewives of Cheshire star Stacey Forsey.
Also mingling at the bash were Ryan’s former Manchester United team-mate Nicky Butt, BBC 6 Music DJ Chris Hawkins, along with his wife, TV weather presenter Clare Nasir and celebrity chef Andrew Nutter.
It might appear that Ryan, who left his coaching role with United in July, has his hands full with hospitality projects, given his investment in Hotel Football with fellow former Red Gary Neville, and their ambitious plans at the former Stock Exchange in the city centre and the huge St Michael’s Development on Jackson’s Row.
But when we asked how he managed to juggle it all, he joked: “It’s not hard now that I’m unemployed!
“This is the first time in 25 years I’ve had a break from football really. I am enjoying it, there’s not as much pressure and it’s been great to spend more time with my kids, watching my son play football, the normal things that people with kids do.”
Meanwhile Ryan, Kelvin and Bernie took the opportunity to thank local customers for all their support of the venue, positioned in the heart of Worsley village on Barton Road, which won a prestigious AA Rosette last year.
