Ryan Giggs celebrates his birthday - by switching on hometown Christmas lights

Ryan Giggs celebrated his birthday in style by turning out in Worsley to switch on his home town Christmas lights.

The Manchester United star wished the bustling crowd a merry Christmas as he took the plunge and illuminated the festive decorations on Friday .

The ceremony, organised by the Worsley Village Community Association, took place on the footbridge over the Bridgewater Canal.

It was the first time Giggs, who has lived in Worsley since 2004, has been offered the chance to switch on the local lights and he stayed and chatted with fans after the event.
