Gylfi Sigurdsson could thrive at Everton alongside Wayne Rooney, says Giggs

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs believes Swansea City star Gylfi Sigurdsson could thrive at Everton following the Toffees' capture of his former team-mate Wayne Rooney.

The Iceland international's future remains uncertain after he withdrew from the club's pre-season tour of the US at the eleventh hour last week.

He has been left to train at Swansea's Fairwood base having seen his bosses turn down a £40m offer from Everton, who are yet to make a second bid for the 27-year-old midfielder.

But ex-Wales ace Giggs believes Sigurdsson could be a huge hit at Goodison Park, adding that the Swansea man could form a strong partnership with Rooney who re-joined his boyhood club from the Red Devils earlier this month.

"First of all I think it is a great move for Everton to get Wayne," said Giggs.

"I feel he still has plenty to offer on the field, but he will be such a great influence on the younger guys at Everton.

"You look at the England Under-20s side that won their World Cup, there were quite a few Everton players in there and someone like Wayne Rooney is going to play a big role in helping them come through.

"Wayne has the know-how of being at a successful club and what a successful dressing room is like. I am sure Ronald Koeman will be delighted to have him on board as a senior player.

"As for Sigurdsson, I think they could definitely play together if that move happened. Good players love playing with other good players.

"He has been such an important player for Swansea, you could argue they would not have stayed up without him last season.

"He is a brilliant set-piece taker, a real goal threat and he works very hard too. Players like him will always attract interest, no matter who they play for."

Paul Clement kept in contact with his prized asset while on tour in America, and recently admitted that there is still a chance that Sigurdsson could remain with the Swans next season.

And Giggs believes the money involved in today's game could prove vital in Swansea's bid to keep hold of their talisman beyond the summer transfer window.

"It is down to Swansea as to what happens next," added Giggs.

"The money in the Premier League now means clubs can afford to turn down big offers for players.

"That may have been different a few years ago, but with the new TV deal and the continued growth of the Premier League it is not simply a case that some clubs have to sell.

"Obviously it can be difficult if the player says he wants to go and that can change the situation.

"I don’t know the ins and outs of the situation but he is still a Swansea player as it stands and I am sure they will be doing everything they can to hold on to him."
