Football legends and celebrities head to Ryan Giggs' restaurant launch in Worsley

Football might have been off the menu, but there were plenty of striking treats as Manchester United star Ryan Giggs launched his new restaurant, George's in Worsley.

Reds winger Ryan has gone into the restaurant business with his old school pals Kelvin Gregory and Bernie Taylor.

And the proud trio showed off the fruits of their labours last night at a VIP do after transforming the old Milan Italian restaurant into a swanky new eaterie on Barton Road.

Guests at the launch bash included Ryan's former team-mates Gary Neville and Nicky Butt , Reds legend Bryan Robson, Happy Mondays star Rowetta ,  DJ Dave Haslam and Coronation Street stars Alan Halsall , Andy Whyment and Jack P Shepherd.

Ryan said: "We've known each other for 30 years and we always said it would be great to do something like this together.

"We're all local lads and have lived in this area all our lives so we wanted to do something in Worsley and we think we've got a really different offering for the area."

Worsley is in the midst of a foodie boom at the moment, with the revamped Old Hall opening last month, and the new Albert's opening in the village next month.

But Ryan and his pals say it can only be good for business.

He said: "We think it's great for the area, we can all bounce off each other and it all makes Worsley a bit of a foodie destination."

Ryan hailed his favourite dish on their menu, created by acclaimed chef Andrew Parker, to be the chicken liver parfait starter, although he admitted he has to give the desserts a miss thanks to his athletic day job.

He laughed: "I've not tasted too many of the desserts. I do have to be careful, but a little treat once a week isn't a problem."

Meanwhile Ryan insists he doesn't feel in competition with his Reds comrade Rio Ferdinand , who owns the popular Rosso Italian restaurant in the city centre.

Ryan said: "Even before I got into the hospitality business I would speak to Rio all the time about how his restaurant is going. He's got a beautiful building there for Rosso and it's going really well for him."

And Ryan has been spreading the word among his teammates about his new venue.

He said: " Fellaini has been in as he has just moved to the area and I've told the others about it.  The problem is a lot of them live in the Cheshire area,  but I'm sure they will want to come and sample some of our chef Andrew's amazing dishes."
