Class of '92 challenge builders to 5-a-side game

As ways to spend your lunch break go, a kick around with the Class of ‘92 isn’t bad.

Construction staff working on the Hotel Football project, being built next to Old Trafford, got the chance to down tools and play against United legends Gary and Phil Neville, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and newly-crowned assistant manager Ryan Giggs.

Well on its way to completion, the leisure scheme is the brainchild of GG Hospitality, the property development company set up by Gary Neville and Giggs. And the Manchester Evening News today revealed Scholes Butt and Phil Neville have invested in the 133-bedroom hotel scheme.

The venue will have a range of football-themed features, including a rooftop five-a-side pitch, and it was on the site of this attraction the players challenged construction workers to an impromptu game - complete with high-vis jackets for goalposts.

Hotel Football will also house the Old Trafford Supporters Club and is set to open its doors this Autumn.

After the kick-about, Gary Neville said: “Ryan and I are looking forward to another new challenge, working with our former teammates again to create something special near to the stadium we all love.”

Hotel Football has created 200 jobs for Greater Manchester construction workers and the team will be working with Trafford College to offer its students work experience in the hospitality industry.

Giggs said: “Through the hotel we are giving local people the opportunity to work in a great hospitality environment. We will also be working closely with local students to help them build their own careers as this is something we are really passionate about.”

Butt added: “Hotel Football Manchester gives us the chance to build something new and successful so close to Old Trafford, a place we all enjoy spending our careers.”

The five former players are working with GG managing director Stuart Proctor on the project.

Hotel Football will be headed-up by general manager Stewart Davies, who has previously run Manchester venues, including the Mint Hotel and the Hilton Double Tree.

Mr Procter said: “We are excited to be opening Hotel Football with five of the most fantastic players of our generation. Their knowledge of football is second to none and this will be evident throughout the hotel, but the focus will be on quality, as well as football – to ensure it will be a great experience for everyone.”

Gary Neville, Butt, Giggs and Scholes all came through the ranks at United in the so-called Class of ‘92, along with David Beckham. Phil Neville graduated from the 1995 youth team.
