Ryan Giggs concerned about one potential issue with Bruno Fernandes
Ryan Giggs believes Bruno Fernandes could be a liability playing in a deeper midfield position for Manchester United.
The Portugal international made his Red Devils debut in Saturday's goalless draw with Wolves after joining in a £47million deal from Sporting Lisbon.
Fernandes, an attacking midfielder by trait, was deployed in a deeper role in the second-half at Old Trafford.
Despite showing glimpses of his quality in an unfamiliar position, United legend Giggs wants to see Fernandes causing havoc in the final third of the pitch.
He told Premier League Productions: "There were glimpses of the quality he does possess.
"I think it might need a bit of working out what his best position is.
"With his back to goal, I don't think that's his position. When he's a little bit deeper, defensively, he may be a bit of a liability. He's in-between the two really.
"That's where you want to see him, coming on to the ball [in the final third].
"But also you see when he is that little bit deeper he can spray the passes, he has got the vision to then play those passes. But then you need the runs."
Fernandes attempted five shots from outside the box, with Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio making two routine saves.
Diogo Dalot, who missed a gilt-edged chance to put United in front late on, is confident his countryman will thrive in England.
He said: "The players knew Bruno was a very good player, of course.
"It's different seeing him abroad and then seeing him in training every day. He's going to bring us a lot.
"I knew him and I think he's going to be a very good player for us and he's going to help us build this team.
"He's an experienced player. He played abroad a lot of years and you knew he could come here and do a great job.
"For me, it was not a surprise and I think that he is going to show us a lot more that he did today but it was a fantastic debut for him."
