Rooney & Giggs: We owed fans

Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs paid tribute to Manchester United’s fans after the team booked a place in the Champions League quarter-finals with a 3-0 win over Olympiacos.

The Old Trafford faithful were once again in fine voice to inspire David Moyes’ men to a memorable 3-2 aggregate win, courtesy of Robin van Persie’s hat-trick.

Both Rooney and Giggs were understandably pleased after the game, though Giggs insisted the Reds won’t get carried away after numerous false dawns this season.

“We showed a real desire to win,” Rooney told Sky Sports. “The fans were brilliant and they deserved a big performance from us and a big result.
“And we owed a good result to ourselves and the manager. It’s a great result and it will hopefully kick-start a positive end to our season.”

Giggs added: “There was pressure on us, especially after Sunday [the 3-0 defeat to Liverpool]. That was a disappointing performance and result. We owed the fans because they’ve been unbelievable.

“We’ve had good results and then not followed them up so we won’t get carried away – we just need to keep producing performances like tonight.”
