Giggs confident of Champions League progress

Ryan Giggs was disappointed not to beat Real Sociedad on Tuesday, though the Manchester United legend remains confident of progressing to the UEFA Champions League knockout stages this season.

The Reds recorded a goalless draw at the Anoeta Stadium but were perhaps unfortunate not to take all three points having controlled most of the possession whilst missing a penalty through Robin van Persie, who also struck the post from close range.

Notably, Tuesday’s stalemate was duplicated in Ukraine as Shakhtar Donetsk drew 0-0 with Bayer Leverkusen, a result that leaves United top of Group A. As a result, Giggs believes his team-mates are well capable of earning the results needed to advance.

“I think we controlled the game tonight, we had two or three great chances and probably should have won the game,” Ryan told ITV Sport. “We are probably happy with the performance but disappointed that we didn’t get the three points.

“If you get a point away from home and win your home games then you usually go through and we are on track to do that at the moment, so hopefully we can finish the job off.”

Expanding on his point, Giggs added: “That is what we will try and do. We have got two tough games left to play but we are up for the task. We have played both Shakhtar and Leverkusen, we know what they are all about and we are confident of going through.”
