25 years since Giggs's debut

This Wednesday, 2 March, marks 25 years since Ryan Giggs's remarkable playing career for Manchester United's first team began with a debut against Everton at Old Trafford.

That seminal match, in which the then 17-year-old came off the bench to replace the injured Denis Irwin, announced to the world one of the best and unique talents British football has produced in the modern era. Giggs went on to make a record 963 appearances for the Reds during 24 years as a player.

He also scored 168 goals, netting in all but one of his 22 seasons in the first team, and won every major honour at least twice with 13 Premier League titles, two European Cups and four FA Cups being the highlights of his incredible haul.

Giggs's electric pace and famed trickery on the left wing prompted legendary former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson to utter one of his most memorable quotes: "I remember the first time I saw Giggs. He was 13 and floated across the ground like a cocker spaniel chasing a piece of silver paper in the wind."

Now United's assistant manager, Giggs the player influenced a whole generation of footballers, from team-mates who played alongside him each day in training, to those who faced him in European or international encounters or gladly watched with interest from afar. France icon Zinedine Zidane once remarked: “If Giggs was French, I would have been on the bench!"
