Giggs: Loftus-Cheek was brilliant but should not have started for England

Ryan Giggs has claimed that Ruben-Loftus Cheek should not have started for England against Brazil tonight.

The Chelsea midfielder, who is currently out on loan at Crystal Palace, made his international debut in the goalless draw against Germany on Friday.

And his impressive performance meant Gareth Southgate entrusted him with another starting spot tonight.

But he pilled up injured on the 35th minute and had to be replaced by Jesse Lingard.

And Giggs, who was speaking as a pundit for ITV, revealed that he thought the 21-year-old should not have been handed a starting spot - and it was not because of his fitness.

“I said I wouldn’t start him,” the former Wales midfielder said on ITV.

“Purely for the reason that he’s a young lad, he’s only played 20-odd games at first-class level.

“He was a breath of fresh of air, it’s nothing to do with his performance, he was brilliant.

Making the right decisions, attacking players, but to do it against Germany and then get all the adulation over the weekend and then to do it again against Brazil is a big ask.

“But, like I said on Friday, England haven’t got many options in that department.

“So it’s not a surprise he starts again and hopefully he puts in another brilliant performance.”
