Ryan Giggs lined up for showbiz farewell with New York Cosmos

Ryan Giggs is set to be offered the chance to play in a number of exhibition games with New York Cosmos.

The veteran Manchester United winger is out of contract in the summer, although he is expected to extend his stay at Old Trafford by yet another year.

Yet, Giggs could be lured away by the chance to join Cosmos in 2012 as part of a series of big games to return them to the world stage. Everton midfielder Phil Neville is another target for the American side.

Brokers acting on behalf of the newly-reformed franchise want to bring in glamour players when they gain their licence to join the MLS.

The exhibition matches will be billed as football’s version of the Harlem Globetrotters. Cosmos – stars of the North American Soccer League in the 70s and 80s with players such as Pele and Franz Beckenbauer – recently reformed after going bust in 1985.
